I love Japanese cinema and I found the movie to be interesting, but unfortunatly overrated, especially compared to Kurosawa pictures from the same period. It looks pretty and the acting is good, but the plot unfolds too slowly and sprawls in too many directions, so it lost my interest after some time. However, the ending is very strong and I recommend watching it for the ending alone, but the first hour kind of dragged a bit in my opinion.

Ugetsu tells the adventures of two men who seek fortune in times of war, and the tribulations of their abandoned wives. Beautiful photography and deliciously irritating music serve a rich story full of surprises. A true masterpiece.

I was surprised by how good this movies was. I didn't expect much when I started watching it, but it was really well put together. I quickly forgot about the fact that it was 60 years old and in black/white. I can definitely recommend it!

Lady Wakasa's dance is truly one of the most captivating sequences of cinema I've ever seen, moves me to tears and simultaneously to a hushed silence every time I see it.
