Thanks for the clarification, Ataraxic. I had assumed before that they were the same film, and never spotted the difference. Where did you get your information about this one? I saw the other one (Fish Preserving) on the Milestone ten-DVD collection Early Russian Cinema, but I now I realize I haven't seen this one.
Fans of Edmund Kean or Russian émigré in France Ivan Mozzhukhin (aka Mosjoukine), the Edmund Kean of his era, will have to see this film. The movie contains a few dazzling moments, like the scene of dancing in the pub, but on the whole calling the film high melodrama would be a comical understatement.
I thought I had a basic grasp of bicycles, but this film really widened my horizons. I appreciate especially that although the many hidden difficulties are discussed, one's basic love of bicycles is still maintained. A happy ending through rhymed inculcation. Thanks, GM, for all that you bring to the world.
To my mind, this film is very slight among Griffith's early shorts, some of which are quite powerful-- and often quite striking in their social messages. However, Scorsese cites this film in his doc for technical reasons, in particular as a very early example of crosscutting for dramatic effect (at the film's dramatic climax).
Best film for children? I'd say no. This one emphasizes vicious competition in a world where things are constantly being eaten alive, all while the film's soundtrack plays jolly jazz. It's a remarkable film, but a tad depressing.
No, I was more implying that this film is typical of very early Hollywood in its classist visions of paranoia whereby all that is holy and pure is ever threatened by bogeymen of the lower class. Such frequent depictions are the class equivalent of what Birth of a Nation does with race.

It's impressive that they filmed all that underwater.Too bad the print is degraded, as an early silent Western from Ecuador is an interesting rarity.
If you want to follow the story, be ready with the pause button, as many of the intertitles are flashed too quickly.

I was intrigued by Pope Pius XI's vestments here. He looks like a cowboy-butcher-pimp (no disrespect intended to the institution).Movie comment on Baba Despina

From the same creative team that brought you Domashna rabota (predilki).Actually, the woman featured here, named Despina, was the Manaki brothers' 114-year-old grandmother!
