Yeah, can confirm the MMDan link is wrong. But hey, the cover they display is right!
Anyway, here's the link to the right movie on OK with English Subs: https://ok.ru/video/3606424128055
(2012 Criterion Release) Hollywood's red-headed step-child is a thing of beauty. Not saying it's not without its flaws, but so much better in its restored form than the beating it took from the studio on it's initial wide release. Gorgeous film.
Echo the fast and lose inclusion of too many non-fantasy films on this list as well as the aggravation of the numerous lost films on it. Why are they even on the source list if they're lost? Love to find out, but the source link is returning a 404 so can't even go gripe on there about it. Surely there are better fantasy lists to make official.
Yes, there are a lot of great films on this list, but there are also a good number of absolutely dreadful films on it, too. There's also a number of films that don't even qualify as sci-fi, or if they do, by the very slimmest of margins.
The leader of H.I.V.E. enlists a vampire to recruit and partner with Petyr Baelish to investigate U.F.O. phenomenon for the United States Air Force. Industry rental houses rejoice.
Hard to be objective about this one, as it's wrapped up in some nostalgic movies my father and I shared back in the day. Regardless, I still think it's an underappreciated film when placed in context of era and genre. I've watched it numerous times over the years; it doesn't demand too much from the viewer, but delivers on entertainment every time.
@ntan - respectfully, I have to disagree. Unfortunately, the common perception of what constitutes a horror film has become very narrow in recent decades, but the concept of horror is much broader than jump scares, blood, and boogeymen. Filmsite.org offers one as good a definition of the horror genre as any others I have seen:
quote:
"Horror Films are unsettling films designed to frighten and panic, cause dread and alarm, and to invoke our hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying, shocking finale, while captivating and entertaining us at the same time in a cathartic experience. Horror films effectively center on the dark side of life, the forbidden, and strange and alarming events. They deal with our most primal nature and its fears: our nightmares, our vulnerability, our alienation, our revulsions, our terror of the unknown, our fear of death and dismemberment, loss of identity, or fear of sexuality."
If we take any of those elements and ask ourselves what truly invokes them, we can take a much broader view of horror in general. Yes, this film very much plays as a straightforward drama at times, but it also has some truly dreadful moments. The horror is largely psychological and more 'realistic' than the typical horror movies of today.
Finally sitting down to start this. Definitely going to have to be in installments due to length and gravity.
One of those experiences I've been dreading as much as looking forward to.
This list is irrelevant in so many ways, but the nationality sandbagging (I'm looking at you, India) is particularly irritating. I see the latest organized push is a 40 year old flick that all of a sudden just drops into the list at #127. What a freaking joke.
I didn't have much use for the Rocky franchise past the original, but Balboa, and now Creed, are definitely worthy additions. The boxing sequences in this film in particular are an amazing ballet between camera and subject. So well done. Good story. Good acting all the way around.
Can I just assume that this is another overrated Bollywood flick with the same tired formula and mediocre execution and check it off? I'm guessing by most of the other comments, I can. Seriously... Bollywood fans... stop with the overrating!
Anyway... watching now. We'll see.
Edit: Sure enough... made it as far as the first musical number... moving on to the next of this lot on the 2000's list. Hoping for a surprise in there somewhere, but not holding my breath.
Yet another grossly overrated Indian movie. It's the same old story time and time again with these flicks. Bad acting of a melodramatic story, interrupted on occasion by a musical routine. IMDB Indian users... stop with the obvious patriotically weighted rating.
Definitely strong in some areas, but overrated on the whole. I like Jude Law in most of his stuff, but don't think he was the best choice for this role. Then there's Kidman and Zellwegger... they couldn't have chosen two more overrated, annoying actresses. Visually stunning flick, I'll give it that and some of the supporting cast are fantastic. 6/10
Last films for both Gable and Monroe. Monroe's tragically confused character in the film is how I imagine she was in life, at this time. Apparently, the shoot was dysfunctional and awash in alcoholism from the director on down. Good film and a great piece of film history.
