This really feels like it was made in the 90's. It's a raw, simple drama. I really enjoyed it. Be aware though, it's something like 95% drama and 5% comedy.
The most implausible plot I've seen in a very long time. The other aspects of the movie are okay, nothing special. Honestly the credit design is the best part of the entire production.
Very formulaic, you've seen this plenty of times before. Maybe setting up the numerous characters left no time for defining scenes. On the plus side it fleshes out the backstory for several characters, which might make it fun to see for fans of the franchise. Pretty forgettable for everyone else I'd say.
I think the intersection between Chomsky's and Gondry's worlds is a narrow one. This is not so much a structured story as it is a series of more or less casual and personal conversations illustrated with animations. If you like Chomsky and/or Gondry, or think you might, then this might be an interesting view into their minds. If not then I suggest you try out some of their other stuff first. Personally I enjoyed it, thanks to my interest in them both.
I went into the theatre expecting this to be a more sober, objective and documentary-styled version of the events depicted in Zero Dark Thirty, but I was very much surprised by what I ended up seeing. The interview objects, or characters if you will, with very few exceptions all struck me as having frighteningly little ability to question the events they were at the centre of on any moral level. It's possible that this is of the director's doing, but regardless I left the theatre with the feeling that the film was mostly about people defending their reputation as good workers among their superiors and co-workers after an office quarrel, and not even remotely about the larger moral questions of what the military and intelligence bureaus are doing to human beings in other countries. I was extremely disappointed. To me this film appears pointless. And in the light of how important and complex the events it circles around are, crushingly so. I also left the theatre with an ominous feeling of that if the level of intelligence displayed in this film is representative for the people in charge of some of the most powerful organisations on earth, then we're all in trouble.
I had high expectations for this when it came out after seeing the trailer, but when everyone said it wasn't very good I ended up not bothering to watch it. This turned out to be a brilliant move. Now, when I finally watched it on a whim, my expectations where pretty low, and so I was positively surprised. I should do this more often.
Run of the mill plot, juvenile humour, half-ass acting, mediocre choreography and what felt like rather a lot of poor CG (bodily fluids mostly). Still the film is not completely devoid of charm. The villain side of the story was easier to stomach than the hero one, and some of the villain themes were cool.
Like uritibon I am somewhat perplexed about what this film is trying to convey. At first there seems to be something of a serious message underneath the light hearted comedy,
describing how humanity could eventually evolve into a majority of dumb people or, well, idiots
. It doesn't take long though before the film itself descends into idiotic slapstick and stays there. Perhaps the makers were trying to make a point, but then had so much fun that they forgot about it. Or perhaps the point was that living in an idiocracy is okay. As it stands though, it seems that the introductory part of this film is an insult to the target audience of the rest of it.
Like dombrewer already said, this film takes a lot of it's plot straight out of the anime version of Akira. To everyone who enjoyed this and haven't seen Akira, I strongly suggest you check it out.
The long fight scene in the hallway is the best fight scene I have ever had the pleasure of watching. I don't think there are any other fight scenes that ever got my blood pumping. It's gorgeous.
While I didn't think much of the movie, I did like the premise. There's an interesting side to it that I think could partially help explain the poor ending as well. Say the first batch of NZT was rather crude; it did the job of activating more of the "dormant" parts of the brain, but had serious side effects and long term implications. Now the chemists behind it might be able to improve it slightly given enough time and resources, but here's the thought: What if the chemists themselves use NZT while working on improving it? It would enable them to improve it vastly in a lot less time, which would again enable them to improve it even more. All other areas of science would also potentially accelerate vastly, if the drug was made available to more people. Much like microscopes improve our ability to see and computers our ability to calculate, a drug like NZT would improve our ability to think. I for one am glad I probably won't be alive the day this scenario might come true, as it would potentially create impassable boundaries between those with access to it and those without, to a degree never before seen. I don't think the world really needs more uneven distribution of resources. But then again I might be giving the script writers too much credit here...

It's well made and children might like it, but the plot is so lazy and predictable that I highly doubt adults will be able to enjoy it.Movie comment on Piper
